6 Ways to Beat the Seasonal Common Cold

One minute you’re fine, the next minute you start to feel like something’s just not right, although you can’t quite pinpoint what it is. Suddenly you’re shivering, your body starts to ache, and your head hurts. Then you realize you’ve got the dreaded seasonal cold and you’re stuck on the couch.

Before you head off to urgent care in a panic, there are some simple solutions that will keep you afloat and get your body through the tough part!

Honey and Lemon Water

When we're ill, one of the top recommendations we get from doctors is to stay hydrated. Honey is a tasty, naturally antibacterial syrup that soothes a sore throat very quickly.

Manuka honey specifically is very powerful in pain relief for the throat, and the naturally occurring sugars provide calories for those who are having difficulty with nausea. The honey also provides a light coating of your stomach, which will hopefully help to settle it.

Add More Garlic to Your Diet

While we usually use it for a little extra flavor in our meals, garlic is actually an excellent solution to keeping season colds at bay. Studies have shown that garlic can reduce your risk of catching a cold by up to 63%, and can shorten the overall duration of a cold by a whopping 70%! If you’ve ever had a cold in your life, you know that the fast you get over it, the better the situation is.

However, getting the benefits of allinase, the bacteria-fighting compound that garlic contains, can be a bit tricky. When crushed or chewed allinase is released from the clove, but like most veggies and other things that are healthy for us, cooking the garlic will inevitably remove or greatly reduce the presence of the helpful nutrients.

Ginger Root is Amazing for Just About Everything

Have you ever had a Stomach virus? If you have you know that there's virtually nothing that really helps slow down the stomach upset enough to really want to eat anything. Add it to soup and tea or just boil it up with some water and breathe in the vapor.

Ginger encourages your body to sweat, helping you to more easily regulate your temperature and ease the strain of a fever. This holistic remedy is also high in Vitamin C, which is recommended to shorten the time span of your illness.

Olive Leaf Extract

It’s often recommended that you substitute your regular cooking oil with Virgin and Extra Virgin Olive Oil because it’s much healthier. When oils are extracted from the leaf of the olive plant, it can be used as a tea! Olive Leaf Extract contains antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and it balances cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

If you don’t like tea, that’s okay! Find Olive Leaf Extract in capsules and oils as well.

Used in curry dishes and other kinds of Asian cuisine, turmeric and ginger happen to be cousins. In addition to have anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric helps with pain relief as well. Put together a soup with a veggie broth and add turmeric, mint leaves, a little bit of jalapeño pepper, and some mung bean sprouts. The heat from the soup combined with the mint and jalapeño will help to open up your airways, while the turmeric and mung sprouts deliver their nutrients to your bloodstream.

Add Jalapeños to Your Meals if You Can

Not everyone likes spicy foods, but they really do make a difference when you’re under the weather. You don’t have to bite down and swallow a whole pepper, but just adding it to a soup or applying the juices to your meal can be extremely helpful. Spicy peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin, that instantly begins to break down the thick, green, goop that seems to be pouring out of your nose and lungs.

If you don’t like spicy foods, this is probably the reason why! However, you may change your mind if you’re clogged up and struggling to breathe at night. Like turmeric, jalapeños work as a natural pain reliever, and in comparison to ginger, you bet that a spicy pepper is likely to induce sweating a whole lot faster!

At the end of the week, you can expect your symptoms to clear up much more quickly as well.
